Top 5 Dim Sum Restaurants We Recommend You Try In Ipoh

Updated: Mar 23

We’re leaving the famous Foh San out of this list of dim sum restaurants. Sad to say, there are much better options out there.

Whether you’re looking for efficient service, affordable pricing, halal options, or restaurants that also serve coffee, you’ll find all that here.

See our recommendations below.

1. Canning Dim Sum

We’ll start this list off choice for halal dim sum. This is a great place to bring Muslim friends if they want to try dim sum. The dim sum doesn’t have any pork but it’s still tasty, albeit a little sweet for our tastebuds.

The eatery is not only beautiful and spacious, but they have coffee on the menu too.

They have some unusual dishes but the ones you can’t go wrong with are their salted egg yolk buns and fried radish cakes.

What’s more, the restaurant closes relatively later than other dim sum eateries in Ipoh (after 3pm).

What you need to know is that they’re closed on Wednesdays. And that parking is hard to come by in this area.

  • Address: 1, Lebuh Cecil Rae, Taman Canning, 31400 Ipoh, Perak

  • Opening hours: 7:30am to 3:30pm (Closed on Wednesdays)

2. Chooi Yue Dim Sum

If you don’t mind the higher prices and waiting close to an hour for a table (especially on weekends), Chooi Yue Dim Sum is a popular pick among tourists and locals alike.

They’re not stingy with the meat they use for their dim sum. And if you come at peak time, there is a great variety of dim sum to choose from.

We like a lot of their prawn dim sum like har guen as well as their salted egg yolk steamed buns.

Furthermore, Chooi Yue Dim Sum is another eatery where you can get coffee.

It is very comfortable to dine here since there is air-conditioning and an attractive interior complete with traditional kopitiam furnishings.

  • Address: 2, 4 & 6, Tingkat Taman Ipoh 12, Taman Ipoh Selatan, 31400 Ipoh, Perak

  • Opening hours: 7am to 1pm (Closed on Thursdays)

3. Zui Le Xuan Dim Sum Restaurant

This eatery is far from Ipoh Old Town and you’ll have to fight the locals for it. It opens as early as 7am every day except for Tuesdays.

Their dim sum is very delicious and affordable too. Recommended dishes (our personal favorites) include the siew mai, lotus leaf rice and lo bak ko.

We think that their char siew pao is worth ordering too.

There’s no air-conditioning at here and neither the interior nor surrounding area is appealing, but you’ll forget that once you try the food.

  • Address: 28, Jalan Ng Seong Teik, Taman Pertama, 30100 Ipoh, Perak

  • Opening hours: 7am to 1pm (Closed on Tuesdays)

4. Ming Court Hong Kong Dim Sum

In this part of town, we still feel that Ming Court Hong Kong Dim Sum is one of the better options.

They have incredibly speedy service, and an assortment of traditional dim sum to choose from.

Yes, portions are a little small for the prices.

Their smooth and creamy signature black sesame soup is an absolute must-try here. And so is their loh mai gai and char siew paus.

But you do get to dine in a comfortable indoor environment with air-conditioning without having to wait to long to eat (assuming you can find parking).

  • Address: 36, Jalan Leong Sin Nam, Kampung Jawa, 30300 Ipoh, Perak

  • Opening hours: 6am to 2pm (Closed on Thursdays)

5. Soon Yuen Dim Sum Restaurant

This is another restaurant that is probably not on most tourists’ radar. It’s small, but comfortable and clean inside with air conditioning.

A lot of their dim sum is great tasting and perfectly seasoned. We appreciate that the fried dim sum is not so oily too. If there’s anything to complain about, it’s the limited variety of dim sum on the menu.

But besides dim sum, they do have Sichuan style noodles on the menu including the shredded variety.

Come before 10am for faster service times. Even if you do come during peak time (around 9am), it’s not going to be hard to find convenient parking.

  • Address: 160, Pusat Perdagangan, 162, Jalan Tasek Timur, Taman Tasek Indra, 31400 Ipoh, Perak

  • Opening hours: 7:30am to 3pm (Closed on Tuesdays)

Conclusion

There are a lot more reliable dim sum restaurants that we have excluded from this list. If you have a tour with us, you can always ask your respective guide which is their personal favorite.

If not, then these 5 suggestions are more than enough to start you off on your quest for dim sum in Ipoh!
